The 50th annual Kasabonika Lake Summer Festival brought almost five hundred visitors to the small community of just under one thousand. Promising live music, a thirty thousand bingo jackpot and tons of fun, the annual festival ran from Aug 22 to 27, 2016.

One of the highlights of the weeklong festival was a performance by Cree hiphop group The NorthStars, hailing from Nemaska, QC.

The group released their debut album Dreams in 2013, and have been touring constantly on and off reserves spreading messages of encouragement and empowerment. Producing their own music, the NorthStars also nurture the talent of indigenous youth aspiring to be musicians.

Kasabonika Lake News reporter Claudia Albany sat down with members Gary Jolly and Elton Salt, later joined by third member Keith Lacroix, to discuss youth mentorship and what’s on the horizon for the Northstars.

Interview originally aired on Wawatay News August 30, 2016.
